Sergio (2020) is the iconic, personalized and special account of the going-to-be or contender of the position of the UN Secretary-General, Sergio De Mello.
The era of UN Diplomacy that he and Kofi Annan maintained with other diplomats, ended in 2003 when he died due to Al-Qaeda's bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad in August 2003.
I feel the United Nations currently needs more constructive diplomats who can calm nationalistic incentives that populists of the Global North and the Global North want in different directions.
I see India, Germany, Singapore, France and China the next power-shifters in many aspects. Leaving China aside due to some and not all obvious reasons, India and Singapore have a bigger incentive to proceed therein. Germany and France have good incumbency ratings for their leaders, so they can normalize the Global North's populist retorts. We need Russia's open, less timid but trusted involvement as well in order to regain the era of UN Diplomacy. I think we can do that, but that can only be achieved when the United States enables a diplomatic reservoir for shadow diplomats.
When I say Shadow diplomats, I mean diplomats who may or may not pretend that the jus cogens infrastructure of states may not have amenable pretensions at least in the eyes of non-state actors that they try to show. I meant India as a suitable example. We can see some signs of that kind of diplomacy in the United States and Russia too in the Middle East, Korea and other regions. Anyways, India did handle the controversy related to the abrogation of the Article 370 of the Indian Constitution in a smarter way and won effective consensus when a diplomatic isolation might have been possible. However, under Dr Jaishankar and S Akbaruddin, India stabilized its diplomatic strengths. Thus, in these strange times, identity politics should not engulf the United Nations and institutions like World Bank, the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization because if that is properly contained, a propriety of a new era of UN Diplomacy can come into being.
